Great Divide Bound!

If you happen to know me personally you will probably know by now that in less than a week I plan to ride the GDMR from Canada to Mexico with a friend, Joseph Showalter. The last few months have been filled with frenetic activity as we have been preparing for our trip. I have dreamed about doing this ride after I first stumbled upon a race that is done every year on this route. It roughly follows the Continental Divide along the spine of the Rockies. We will be doing this ride totally unsupported and plan to camp most of the time to save money. As you can imagine it has been taking quite a bit of planning!

This all started when I jokingly asked Joseph if he wanted to bike from Canada to Mexico next summer. I was mostly kidding but he said "Sounds like Fun!" Having called my bluff he then bought a bike and started riding with me starting late last fall. Up till then he hadn't ridden more than a few miles in years but before long he was able to easily keep up with me on our training rides. We were able to get in a 100 mile ride in March and another 103 miles on an incessantly hilly route near Mathias West Virginia about a month ago. We have spent untold amounts of money and time getting ready for this trip and from what I have heard about this route it will be worth every penny.

Joseph and I plan to post pictures and write ups on our trip at least once every week or so.

Here are some pictures of what we have been up to over the last month or so.

We hope to leave the Valley on the 12th of this month and plan to get back around the first of August unless things don't go according to plan. As we get closer to setting out I have to admit I am somewhat overwhelmed with what we have gotten ourselves into. I just pray that things go well and that this will be the experience of a lifetime.

Til next time,
